Swimsuit for somewhat overweight young woman?

Kristina

Hi there,

I'm 20, 5'3", and 160 lbs. I used to be 145 and just had a disaster with a bad medicine and gained all this weight, so I'm feeling pretty insecure and would love to find a new swimsuit that I can wear in the meantime and feel better about my body in (going to Hawaii with BF in August) until I can manage to get back down to my normal size.

Other factors: I wear a 34DD bra size, so I absolutely need a suit with support in the chest. All of that recently added weight found its home in my stomach/butt/hip area; I'm still pretty content with my legs, arms, etc., so I'm less concerned about showing them off. I also really like bright colors, but I know that's not likely to look good on me in my current size... I try to avoid wearing black because I have VERY fair skin (practically white, and blond hair and blue eyes), so the darkest I'd want to go is brown. Blue, green, red and brown tend to look good on me.

Any suggestions would be welcome and very much appreciated! Thank you!

Banding will give the appearance of a waist as will chevron or diagonal stripes. Look for tummy control and side panels, side seaming and shirring to create curves. Classic styles and solid colors are the most slimming. Sheer cut-outs offer a sexy peek of skin.

Because these swimsuits are so traditional, go for a more fun, youthful coverup:

Since you enjoy your arms, go for a split-sleeve tunic~ http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/application/prodDisplay/?namespace=productDisplay&origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&event=display&prnbr=8N-221087&page=1&cgname=OSSWMCOVZZZ&rfnbr=1339

However, if you would rather show off your legs, try a jumpsuit~ http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/application/prodDisplay/?namespace=productDisplay&origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&event=display&prnbr=8N-225815&page=1&cgname=OSSWMCOVZZZ&rfnbr=1339

If you want something more basic and simple, just go for a regular tunic dress~ http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/application/prodDisplay/?namespace=productDisplay&origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&event=display&prnbr=8N-182225&page=1&cgname=OSSWMCOVZZZ&rfnbr=1339

P.S. I know these swimsuits are pricey but if you plan on wearing one for the whole summer, it's best to invest in one or two really great looking suits. Best of luck, hon!

swimsuit etiquette for women?

jun2000

Hi all,

I am new to swimming and have a question as to the swim-suit etiquette for women. I am currently living in South Korea and being in a conservative country, women basically scream at me if I wear a swim suit without a built-in bra. Seriously, I have been pulled out of the pool and the lady who did that provided me with a pair of water proof bra to use while I was in the pool. I am so used to ballet where wearing nothing but tights under a leotard is a convention that I am wondering whether the same rule extends to swimming in the US. I will be leaving Korea for the US soon so won't be swimming here much anyway. If there are experiences swimmers out there, please let me know if I need to get a pair of water-proof bras to swim in the US. Thanks!
+just adding some thoughts after I read your answers--thanks much for the replies, btw.

I am a korean but I left my country in early 20s living in the US since then. Sometimes I am shocked at how much I forgot about what happens in my own country! As for the swimsuit issue, I am so surprised that women managed to see my nipples through a thick, black material. It is as if they were fixating on my swimsuit to figure out what is wrong--creepy! Glad to be back to the land of freedom! LOL

Answer
I hope you arrive safely, and you will probably be shocked when you see what little people wear, especially on the beach. Women wear bathing suits and clothing all the time that you can see their breasts through, its considered a personal decision here.
