Most fitness models are scouted at sporting events they are competing in. A friend who works in Self and Shape magazine and has done ads for companies like Puma, Roxy, etc was scouted at a beach volleyball tournament she was competing in. Others are scouted at various fitness competitions.
Wilhelmina Models takes fitness models. They even have an annual model search in conjuction with Fitness magazine. If you are in LA, Bobby Ball agency specializes in fitness models.

How can I become a Teen Fitness Model?

Kaylee
I am a 16 year old girl. I've got awesome abs from competitive cheerleading and from working out. I've got well defined biceps, triceps, and calfs. I am only 5'3, wear a size small, 3 to be exact. What can I do to become a fitness model at my age?
Answer
Under 18s need parents permission to model & adult chaperones to all shoots, interviews & casting calls. Parents must ensure work is within government guidelines re hours, pay etc. If applicable a youth work permit will be needed. The law requires parents make model agency applications on behalf of under 18s. Apply at open calls, or by email to agency offices, or by online application forms found on the agencies` websites. Be sure the agency is age appropriate - some are over 18s only.
To find agencies search online for 'Model Agencies ***** (ie the area you want to search). Do authenticity checks as below. Ensure the agency has the category of modelling you want to do. Under 18s can do Fitness,Runway,Catalogue,Fashion,Print, Magazine,Advertising,Promotional, Plus Size, Character, Commercial, Editorial, Parts Modelling, Hair & Photographic. Swimwear, Lingerie & Underwear must be catalogue style & not provocative (over 18s only).
Modelling isn`t only about fashion, it`s also about selling a product, commodity or idea. Only Runway modelling has measurement criteria - agencies are aware teens may still be growing. Adult females are expected to be within an inch of 34"-24"-34" & 5'8-5'11 tall. Adult males- waist 30"â35" chest 36"â40" height 5'11-6'2. Agencies do not weigh models - but they expect healthy BMIs. Other modelling genres do not have measurement criteria - proved by 1000s of successful models worldwide under 5'8 (females) and 5'11 (males).
Send agency applications with 4 photos. 2 facing the camera -1 portrait (top of the head down to the shoulders) & 1 full body (head to feet). 2 side profile images, portrait & full body. Stand up straight. Wear a fitted plain T shirt & fitted jeans. Girls, no make-up & hair off the face. This also what you should wear for open calls or interviews.
Application photos show what you look like, a portfolio shows if you have the ability to model. Portfolios include images in the model`s chosen genres. Professional un-edited or clear amateur shots are acceptable. Use images from several photographers. You will need permission from the photographer to include their images in your portfolio as they own the copyright. For further portfolio information: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/indâ¦
Use international modelling sites (Model Mayhem /Purestorm/ OneModelPlace) to locate photographers in your area. Not all photographers on these sites are genuine. 99% are, always check references. Some photographers work TFP/TFCD i.e model & photographer give time to a shoot in return for prints or images on CD to use in their portfolios. Most photographers will charge for their work- ensure the price they quote is all inclusive.
Do not use Portfolio Studios as often the price does not include the images, only studio time & the photographer. Portfolio Studios often ignore the 7 day cooling off period & use hard sell to entice their customers to pay high prices for poor quality images. The 'scouts' in malls are selling agents for these studios and not from genuine agencies.
3 out of 4 agencies are scam. The quickest, but not exclusive, way to check is google the agency name followed by the word 'scam' or 'review' & read the results. Be aware that where there are negative reviews, scam agencies will write bogus positive reviews. For further information on how to avoid the scams : http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/indâ¦
Genuine agencies receive 1000s of applications direct to their offices. They have no need to scout in malls or advertise on the internet INCLUDING Facebook, FaceParty, Gumtree (or any classified ads sites), Google Ads, YahooAds. To clarify, when making internet searchs related to modelling ALL the modelling adverts on the right of the screen & colour shaded areas at the top of the results list are ALL scams. If the site you are reading is genuine, do not presume all sites advertised on the same page are genuine. More often they are scams.
Avoid modelling schools, their remit is to make money not make models. They accept anyone willing to pay the high fees but can give no guarantee of your acceptance by an agency. You are making them money - they won`t pass you on to make money for someone else. Apply direct to the agencies. If signed you will receive free training & you are not wasting your time or money.
Some agencies cover several categories, some a select few, some are exclusive to one style. Agents look for a) the model`s ability to make themselves & the product they are advertising (whether a product or an idea) saleable via the camera or the catwalk and b) models they can market to their clients. Each agency has it`s own client base, and will sign according to their clients` requirements.
It`s not all down to looks or measurements, it is ability to do the job that will get you signed. There are no guarantees. Modelling has a 98% rejection rate & those that do get signed to an agency are not guaranteed work
